Accreditation Exams
Accreditation exams are available, though not required, in the subject areas below for incoming students during the summer prior to their matriculation. Accreditation exams allow for the awarding of units of credit based on previous study and without requiring enrollment in additional coursework in the subject. College credit awarded by successfully passing an accreditation exam is entered as units of credit on the student’s official academic record. Letter grades are not assigned. Any individual accreditation exam may only be taken once. Students wishing to utilize an ADA accommodation approved by Student Disability Services must make that request of the department prior to the dates of the exam.
Students may earn any amount of credit from AP/IB/British A-Level, placement, or accreditation examinations. However, for students matriculating in Autumn 2017 or later, at least 3800 units must be earned through course enrollment to meet degree requirements. Students who enrolled prior to Autumn 2017 should consult the catalog of their year of entry for policies regarding the use of accreditation exam credit or consult their academic adviser.
Calculus Accreditation Exam
The Calculus Accreditation Exam are offered to incoming students who do not plan to enroll in further courses in Mathematics at the University of Chicago but who wish to earn credit for MATH 15100-15200 Calculus I-II, often for the purpose of fulfilling the Core Mathematical Sciences requirement. Students who take the Mathematics Placement Exam and receive placement of MATH 15300/15250/18300/19620 earn back credit for MATH 15100 and MATH 15200 by their successful completion of the higher course. However, if such a course is not part of a student's academic plan, they can nevertheless earn credit for MATH 15100 and 15200 by passing the Calculus Accreditation Exam.
Organic Chemistry Accreditation Exams
The Organic Chemistry Accreditation Exams are offered to incoming transfer students by invitation only in order to gauge previous knowledge attained via college level chemistry study at their previous institution. Students who pass the first exam (for CHEM 22000 Organic Chemistry I) will subsequently be invited to try the next exam in the course sequence. While the accreditation exam focuses on CHEM 22000 Organic Chemistry I through CHEM 22200 Organic Chemistry III, students who receive advanced standing in chemistry on the basis of the accreditation exam results will also be granted credit for CHEM 11100 Comprehensive General Chemistry I through CHEM 11300 Comprehensive General Chemistry III.
Physics Accreditation Exams
The Physics Accreditation Exams are offered to incoming students who wish to earn credit for PHYS 12100 General Physics I through PHYS 12300 General Physics III or PHYS 14100 Honors Mechanics through PHYS 14300 Honors Waves, Optics, and Heat. Students who pass the first exam (for PHYS 12100 or PHYS 14100) will subsequently be invited to try the next exam in the course sequence.
